I have been working for the Ripper Academy for 6 months.
How did you first get into the drone industry and how long have you been in it?
Since I gained my RePL back in 2015 or what it was known back then as the UAV Controllers Certificate, I have been in the Commercial drone world of work for 4 years. In that time I have been an Instructor delivering and assessing the CASA RePL Sub 7Kg/Sub25Kg Multi-Rotor Licence, NVLOS Rating and AROC endorsements to members of the general public and government departments such as QFES/SES, QPS, RAAF and councils. I have also been delivering and assessing the Certificate III in Aviation Remote Pilot VLOS AVI30316 in 20 schools across Queensland and government agencies. I have also been involved in aerial photography, asset inspection, mapping and 3D modelling.
What qualifications do you have?
Main Qualifications: Private Pilots Licence (Aeroplane) and some additional endorsements that go with that category. CASA RePL Sub 25Kg Multi-Rotor, Sub 2Kg Fixed Wing, NVLOS Rating, Certificate III in Aviation Remote Pilot VLOS AVI30316, Certificate IV in TAE.
What do you love most about your job?
I love seeing new people enter the aviation industry and being able to pass on my knowledge on to make them great RPAS pilots.
What’s the coolest thing you’ve done with your job?
The coolest thing I’ve done with drones… It’s hard just to pick one but I’d say it would have to be when I was conducting some aerial filming work of an Australian Army Tiger Helicopter at a school in Gatton. The aircraft came into the school and was putting on a show for the school. Just the whole liaising with the pilots, ground crew and school staff to make this event happen safely and without any incidents was a great feeling.
